Prepositions

 

In this lesson we are going to introduce you to the main chinese prepositions:

(zai4): in  

wo3 zai4 ma3de2li3 zhu4.

里 住。

I live in Madrid 

 

(cong2): from (expresses a departure point) 

Ta1 cong2 bei3jing1 lai2.

北京 来。

He comes from Beijing.  

 

(dao4): to, until (expresses the final point) 

wo3men5 dao4 jia1.

我们 家。

We arrive home

 

(wei4): to, for (expresses the final point, the end or the cause of the action) 

wo3 wei4 nin2 fu2wu4.

您 服务。

I serve you (I am at your disposal)

 

(gei3): accompanies the indirect object of the sentence

ta1 gei3 ni3 xie3xin4.

你 写信。

He writes you a letter  

 

(xiang4): towards  (direction)

ni3 xiang4 dong1 zou3.

东 走。

He walks west  

 

(he2): with

wo3 he2 ni3 qu4.

你 去。

I go with you.  

( gen1, tong2 means the same)  

 

(ba3): it goes before the verb and its object (when the sentence refers to an object or a determined person).  

Ta1 ba3 wo3 jiao4lai2.

我 叫来。

He calls me to come over  

 

(ti4): accompanies the substitute object  

wo3 ti4 ta1 shang4ke4.

他 上课。

I substitute him to give class 

 

(dui4): acoompanies the direct object of the sentence

ta1 dui4 wo3 shuo1

我 说。

He tells me.
