EXERCISE
9 : SHADING
The
shadow, the values, are what allow us to create on the paper or on
a canvas the illusion of volume on a flat surface.
The
tones are created relating one with another. A tone influences the
way we perceive the others (one tones seems a lot more darker, if
we place one lighter one by its side and viceversa).
The
best way to shade is by half-closing your eyes, and then with your
half-closed eyes you can contemplate the simplified image, without
details. By doing this we are trying to reduce the variety of tones
to three essential tones: dark, medium and light. The white of the
paper will be the fourth tones.
I
have chosen a simple still-life for this exercise.
Start
with the most general details and then get more specific. Never start
with just one detail, always start with the most general. Compare
some values with others ("this is lighter than the other...")
