Establish
where the whitest and darkest point is. Then add a few in-between
tones. Once you have done this you can start to value the details and
build the volumes more carefully.
You
will know if you have done a good job because when you contemplate the
drawing with half-closed eyes, it will give you the same "impression"
as the real picture contemplating it the same way.
As
always, the more you practice the better you become and you will be
able to do this almost automatically.

repeat the exercises until you feel comfortable with this and try
and practice a little every day.
