Charcoal:
Flexible,
soft, very fragile. Easy to smudge with a cloth or a smudge stick.
You
can draw a great variety of tones, but if you want to fix your work
and prevent it from smudging, you will need to fix it.
This
is a great tool to use for sketches.

is not a pencil and not a paint - something in between. They are bars
of almost pure pigment. They come in all of the colours of the rainbow.
It
is not a good tool to use if you want to achieve detail. You can smudge
it and add some colours with others.
