Charcoal:

Flexible, soft, very fragile. Easy to smudge with a cloth or a smudge stick.

You can draw a great variety of tones, but if you want to fix your work and prevent it from smudging, you will need to fix it.

This is a great tool to use for sketches.

Pastel:

Pastel is not a pencil and not a paint - something in between. They are bars of almost pure pigment. They come in all of the colours of the rainbow.

It is not a good tool to use if you want to achieve detail. You can smudge it and add some colours with others.
