Lesson 14

.

LIGHTS AND SHADOWS (1) - THE CAP

Up until now we have:

- A finished uniform with a flat appearance (doll)

- The face finished with expression and personality.

Now what is needed, is to give depth to the figure. For this we need to add lights and shadows. The contrast between both will give our figure life, gaining a real aspect.

In general, we get the lights by lightening the base colour with white and the shadows we get by darkening the base colour with black. When you have got enough experience you will see that we can get the lights and shadows using different colours. Anyway, try.

In our case to add lights to the uniform and the cap mix the base colour (German grey 830) with light grey (990) and white (951).

.

.

Add the mixture onto the flat paint brush number 2.

.

.

Before painting the cap or the uniform, rub the brush onto a tissue, so that most of the paint in on the tissue, leaving the brush almost dry.
.

.

Now rub the brush softly onto the areas that protrurde mosr from the cap, so that you can notice the lighter colour against the background ( this will give volume to the cap). Do this a couple of times, if you want to add some more white to the paint. As you can see the cap has changed: it looks more real.

.

.

This technique is called Dry Brush. This helps us, although you shouldn't use this technique too much, as it will give us irreversible effects.
