PANELLING AND VARNISHING

Once we have painted the camouflage, we need to do two things before we stick the transfers on:

- Panel the aeroplane.

- Varnish it.

The shadowing that we have given the panels is the start of the panelling. Now you have to perfectly mark out the lines. There are various ways of doing this: one easy way (with a graphite pencil you start marking the lines, if you go over the lines it doesn't matter as we can erase them with an eraser) and the more complicated lines we can draw with the spray gun (don't try this until you have dominated how to use the spray gun, as you could ruin your work if not careful.

Later, we will varnish it with a varnish which is shiny or at least with a satin effect. Varnishing will equalize the different tones and will serve as a base for the transfers. The transfers are on a thin but shiny layer of film. If we don't varnish using a shiny or satin effect varnish you will be able to see that our transfers will look shiny on our matte looking fuselage, and there is no real way to fix this. When we varnish it it will look as if the transfers have been painted onto the fuselage not simply stuck on.

I personally like MARABU varnish. You mix this one with turpentine 50/50 and then you apply various coats with the spray gun all over the plane.

Leave it to dry for a couple of days (ensuring that the plane is covered up so that dust can not reach it).
