The negative areas

In the next preliminary exercise we are going to paint the gaps, the negative areas.

We are not trying to paint the objects themselves, but the spaces around them. This is another very useful exercise to help you learn how to fit everything in correctly.

You have to stop looking at the objects and concentrate on capturing the spaces that there are around the objects. This way, the objects “will draw themselves”.

To begin with, take some objects and place them in such a way that the composition looks interesting. Nearer, further, with diagonal lines.

As this exercise is not about painting the objects, we will not try and apply colour in a realistic way.

To concentrate on the exercise of drawing, we will use a range of only 3 colours:

A dark shade, a medium tone and white.
