I begin by painting the whole painting with a neutral tone.

Painting on pure white can be misleading, it’s best to paint on a medium tone.

This way it will be easier to judge the darks and lights and relate them to the medium tone and compare them.

In this exercise we are going to start determining the values. That’s to say, we will paint a monochrome painting, expressing the lights and shades and once we have defined the volumes we will go on to deciding the tones (the colour).
