The best thing to do is to start with the darkest tones then go onto the medium tones and finish with the lightest.

Half close your eyes, this way you will only see the shades of the objects, almost without colour, this will allow you to concentrate on the shades.

This method is called grisalla, it was used until the impressionists revolutionised the way to paint.

First develop the painting with grey or sepia tones, and then when you have decided on the volumes, apply colour.
