2º EXAMPLE OF VRIO MODEL

Spanish state-run home (Spanish Tourism)

This is the case of a Spanish company dedicated to the hotel business. This company is characterized by its hotels that enjoy great sentimental richness, as their hotels can be found in castles, palaces and convents. The company rescues abandoned monuments linked to spanish culture and history. This company joins the heritage and installations that it offers the client. Paradores are caracterized by buildings with centuries of history or buildings immersed in priviledged natural environments. They comprise of 90 hotels in total scattered throughout the country. Each hotel fulfills the following objectives:

“- To develop a good quality touristic product, which is a Spanish hotel on an international level and an instrument of the State's tourist policy.

- To provide the recovery of cultural heritage with a touristic aim: to ensure that is will be enjoyed by present and future generations.

- To create tourism in areas with little tourist and economic movement. To encourage the sustainable and respectful development, respecting the environment, of those areas where the establisments are found.

- To promote the traditional regional gastronomy, allowing chefs to rescue recipes and cooking techniques, thus promoting the consumption of good quality Spanish products.

- To make tourists aware of our different culture and environments, allowing tourists to see the diversification of what Spain has to offer and transfer a more enriched image of our country to foreign visitors.

- To develop these activities and make as much profit as possible".

I believe that the resources that this company has, e.g. its installations suppose a competitive advantage on other companies. They perfectly adapt to the definition of a VRIO resource.

V aluable.- their installations have a great historical value as they are situated in priviledged places.

R are.- their hotels are rare, different to modern multinational chain hotels. It is rare to see a hotel which was once a castle, a convent or situated on the shore of the mediterranean sea or the atlantic ocean.

I nimitable.- the competition can not copy this resource.

• Immersed in the Organization of the company - all of the hotels have the same template, which is what makes this company different.
