Telephoto Lens

Their viewing angle is smaller making objects appear larger. They are very useful when shooting objects at far distances and which we can't (or don't want to) get closer to; for example, sports such as football (soccer), surf, etc. We can also use them to take pictures of people without them being aware of what's happening.

These lenses also produce an image and distance distortion. When we are taking a picture using a telephoto, we get the impression that objects are closer than they really are. Another characteristic of these lenses is that the scene is compressed. In other words, objects appear closer to one another than they really are.

Depth of Field is lower, and as a result, it is better when we want to use selective Focus (selective Focus means when a part or a complete object in a picture is in Focus and the rest is out of Focus). Generally, the longer the focal length is, the heavier and larger the lenses will be. This means you will need a tripod or faster shutter speeds to get a good picture (not moved). Telephoto lenses are cheaper but render not too bright results: the wider diaphragm is generally from f/4.5 to f/5.6, or from f/4 to f/5.6, depending on the focal length in which the lens is used. Telephoto lenses with wider diaphragms can be really expensive.

Short Telephoto lenses are ideal for shooting portraits. They produce an out-of-focus background and they don't distort the image. Moreover, since they are not too heavy, we can hold the camera in our hands without needing a tripod. The image is very sharp.

picture Olivia's picture was taken with a 105mm lens under daylight, in the garden. This is why the background (the little visible portion on the upper left hand corner) is blurry or out of focus. The other reason is That I was very close to her enhancing the blurry effect. An advantage of this is that the person viewing the picture only sees Olivia; she is the absolute centre of attention. There is no doubt that she was what the photographer, me, wanted to show.

Telephoto lenses range between 150mm and 300mm. They are perfect to shoot sport pictures, in which the action is usually far away. They are heavier and require the use of tripods sometimes.

Super Telephoto lenses are extremely expensive and they are mainly use for nature and sports photography.
