Lesson 2: THE SANGUINE TECHNIQUE

Sanguine is a material that we can use to draw pictures. You can buy it as a block or a pencil. It is brown or terracota red. It is made with iron oxide.

One of the advantages of using sanguine is that it allows us to take advantage of the texture of the paper. If you use the block you can use it flat on the paper. It provides some spectacular results: it all depends on how you use it, adding or removing pressure.

It has the same advantages as a pencil and charcoal at the same time. People use the blocks more often, as you can draw better with them. You can get finer lines using the edge of the block or wider if you use the width of the block.

If you use the pencil you can get more precise lines. You need to ensure you don't use paper that is too thick, as this will effect the lines.
