ADVERBS OF MANNER 

GRAMMAR

Adverbs of manner are used in a sentence to describe how an actions develops.

	Il écrit bien
	Le malade respire mal
	L'élève répond rapidement

Formation

• Adverbs ending in "-ment": These adverbs are formed by taking a feminine adjective and adding the ending - ment.

If the masculine adjective ends in "-e" then it will coincide with its feminine form and to form the adverb you add the ending "-ment".

There are also some particular rules:

• Adjectives whose masculine form ends in "-ant" / "-ent" form the adverb by ending the endings: "-amment" / "-emment".

Intelligent - Intelligemment

Savant - Savamment

Prudent - Prudemment

Courant - Couramment

• There are adverbs of manner that don't end in "-ment": bien, mal, tard, tôt, vite, ...

Collocation

Adverbs of manner are normally placed after the verb

	Ma mère parle rapidement
	L'enfant écrit lentement
	Il est arrivé très vite
	L'élève n'a pas repondu prudemment la question
	La petite fille chante joyeusement

However, the adverbs "bien / mal" with compound tenses are placed between the auxiliary verb and the participle.

	Il a bien repondu
	Elle n'a pas bien dansé
	Le police a très bien réagí après de l'explosion
	Mon équipe a très mal joué ce match
	Je pense que tu as très bien fait

Comparatives and superlatives

The adverbs of manner can be used to express a comparative and a superlative:

Comparative:

• Comparative of superiority: plus + adverb
• Comparative of inferiority: moins + adverb
• Comparative of equality: aussi + adverb

Superlative:

• Absolute superlative: très + adverb
• Relative superlative: le plus + adverb / le moins + adverb

	Il a travaillé plus rapidement que son frère
	Il a couru le plus vite
	Elle chante aussi bien que son amie
	Tu manges très rapidement
	Le prisonnier a échappé plus facilement qu'il pouvait imaginer
	Ce soldat a été le moins grièvement blessé
	Il a confessé aussi tranquillement que les autres
	Aujourd'hui ils se sont disputés plus violemment que l'autre jour
	Je suis sûr que mon fils lit aussi mal que le vôtre
	Il conduit moins imprudemment que sa soeur
	Il écoute son professeur très attentivement
	Mon cousin voyage moins fréquemment que toi
	Il s'est levé le plus tôt
	Tu parles anglais plus clairement que moi
	Ce chien-ci aboie aussi désagréablement que le tien
