Lesson 23 ª

 The Imperative

  • In French, they use the imperative form with the 2nd person singular and with the 1st and 2nd person plural.

  • In order to see how they form the imperative, we have to distinguish if the verb belongs to the first group (infinitives ending in "-er"), or if it belongs to the other groups.

  • With the verbs from the 1st group, the imperative coincides with the form of the present simple, with the exception of the 2nd person singular which when placed into the imperative drops the "-s".

  •   Present Simple Imperative
    Tu écoutes écoute
    Nous écoutons écoutons
    Vous écoutez écoutez

  • With verbs from the other groups, the imperative coincides exactly with the present simple:

  •   Present Simple Imperative
    Tu cours cours
    Nous courons courons
    Vous courez courez

  • Some verbs are irregular with their formation of the imperative:

  •   Avoir Être Aller
    Tu aie sois va
    Nous ayons soyons allons
    Vous ayez soyez allez
