Lesson 26 ª

 The Future Perfect

  • This future tense is used in French to describe an action that is going to develop in the future but which is described as a concluded action.

  • Quand j'aurai étudié, je jouerai au football When i have finished studying, I will play football (the action of studying will develop in the future, but I am refering to it as a concluded action)

Quand tu seras venu, nous commencerons à manger When you arrive, we will start to eat (the action of arriving has still not happened, it will take place in the future, but I am thinking about once it has happened)

  • This tense is formed with the auxiliary verb "avoir" ("être"  when the main verb indicates movement), followed by the participle of the main verb:

  •   Verb that does not indicate movement Verb that indicates movement
    J'(je) aurai mangé serai allé(e)
    Tu auras mangé seras allé(e)
Il / elle aura mangé sera  allé (e)
    Nous aurons mangé serons allés(ées)
    Vous aurez mangé serez allés(ées)
Ils / elles auront mangé seront allés (ées)

  • When the auxiliary verb is "être" the subject and participle agree in gender and number:

  • Mon frère sera allé My brother will have gone
Ma soeur sera allée My sister will have gone
Mes frères seront allés My brothers will have gone
Mes soeurs seront allées My sisters will have gone

  • The negative form of this verb is formed by placing the particle "ne" in front of the auxiliary and "pas" afterwards:

  • Je n'aurai pas mangé I will not have eaten
Il n'aura pas étudié He will not have studied
Nous ne serons pas partis(es) We will not have gone

  • The question form is constructed starting with the auxiliary, followed by the subject and then the participle of the main verb:

  • Aurai-je mangé ? Will I have eaten?
Aura-t-il étudié ? Will he have studied?
Serons-nous partis (es)? Will we have gone?
