Questions

The question word you chose depends on the function of the noun which it is replacing, and if it is a person or a thing.

The question word is always placed at the start of the sentence and the verb goes in the 3rd person singular, regardless of whether we are refering to one or two people or things.

When the pronoun substitutes a person you use the following forms:

Subject	Qui ?	Who?
Direct Object	Qui ?	Who?
Indirect Object	À qui ?	Who?

Let's see some examples:

Qui viendra ?	Who will come?
Qui regardes- tu ?	Who are you looking at?
A qui parle-t-il ?	Who is he talking to?

In spoken language, it is very common to use the following structure, where there is no inversion: the subject goes in front of the verb:

Subject	Qui est-ce qui  ?	Who?
Direct Object	Qui est-ce que  ?	Who?
Indirect Object	À qui est-ce que  ?	Who?

Here are some more examples:

Qui est-ce qui viendra ?	Who will come?
Qui est-ce que tu regardes ?	Who are you looking at?
À qui est-ce qu' il parle ?	Who is he talking to?

When the personal pronouns refer to things, they use the following forms:

Sujeto	Qu' est-ce qui ?	Qué ?
Objeto directo	Que ?	Qué ?
Objeto indirecto	À quoi ?	A qué ?

They also use the following structure in spoken language:

Direct Object	Qu' est-ce que ...	What?
Indirect Object	À quoi est-ce que ...	What?

Qu' est-ce qui est  tombé ?	What has fallen?
Que regardes-tu ?	What are you looking at?
A quoi pense-t-il ?	What is he thinking about?
