Lesson 39 ª

 Past Conditional

  • The past conditional is formed with the auxiliary verb "avoir" in the present conditional, followed by the participles of the main verb. If this main verb indicates movement, then the auxiliary verb changes to "être".

  • J'aurais mangé I would have eaten
Je serais venu(e) I would have come

  • The forms of the present conditional auxiliary verbs are:

  • Avoir Être
    Aurais Serais
    Aurais Serais
    Aurait Serait
    Aurions Serions
    Auriez Seriez
    Auraient Seraient

  • Lets see some examples:

  • Nous serions descendus (es) We would have got off
Elle serait partie  She would have left
Nous serions resté(es) We would have relaxed

  • As you can see, when you use the verb "etre" as an auxiliary verb, the subject and particle agree in gender and number with the main verb.

  • Il serait parti He would have left
Elle serait partie She would have left
Ils seraient partis They would have left
Elles seraient parties They would have left

  • The negative form of these verbs is constructed in the same way as the present perfect and the past perfect: you place the negative particles "ne" and "pas" between the auxiliary verb:

  • Nous ne serions pas descendus (es) We would not have got off
Elle ne serait pas partie  She would not have left
Nous ne serions pas resté(es) We would not have relaxed

  • Whilst to make a question the following structure is used: auxiliary verb + subject + present participle:

  • Serions-nous descendus(es)?  Would you have got off?
Serait-elle partie ?  Would he have left?
seriez-vous restés (es)? Would you have relaxed?
