Adjectives (l' adjectif)

  • In French, the adjective that accompanies the noun agrees both in gender and number.

  • In order to form a feminine singular adjective, all you have to do is add "e" to the masculine form:

  • Masculine Femenine
    Intelligent Intelligente Intelligent
    Haut Haute Tall
    Petit Petite Small
    Grand Grande Big
    Étroit Étroite Narrow

  • But if the masculine adjective already ends in "e", you do not have to add anything:

  • Masculine Femenine
    Jeune Jeune Young
    Rapide Rapide Quick
    Humble Humble Humble

  • Plural adjectives are formed by adding an "s" to the singular form, this works both for masculine and feminine adjectives:

  • Masculine plural Femenine plural
    Intelligents Intelligentes Intelligent
    Hauts Hautes Tall
    Petits Petites Small
    Grands Grandes Big
    Étroits Étroites Narrow

  • But as with nouns, there are some exceptions depending on the masculine singular ending:

  • Singular ending Plural ending
    x
    "s" "s"
    "x" "x"
    "eau" "eaux"
    "al" "aux"

  • Lets see some examples:

  • Masculine singular Masculine plural
    Précis Précis Precise
    Fatal Fatals Fatal
    Beau Beaux Pretty
    Pointilleux Pointilleux Particular
