Edith Giovanna Gassion est née, le 19 décembre 1915 à l´hôpital Tenon et non pas, sur une pèlerine de policier, dans la rue de Belleville à Paris.

Pour aider son père (artiste des rues), Edith commence à chanter dans la rue. En 1932 à 17 ans elle tombe enceinte. Mais sa fille Cècelle (Marcelle) meurt en 1935. A 20 ans sa mère l´abandonne, elle se retrouve seule au bord de la déprime, de la drogue et de la prostitution.

Louis Leplée, gérant d´un établissement de spectacle, à la mode, lui donne sa première chance et lui trouve son surnom " Piaf " qui signifie moineau à Paris. En 1937 sa carrière démarre. Durant la guerre elle n´a jamais cessé de chanter, de Paris à Berlin. En 1946, elle écrit l´un de ses titres qui feront le tour du monde : La vie en rose.

En 1947 elle embarque pour New York et y rencontre Marlène Dietrich et Marcel Cerdan. Ce dernier deviendra son amant. Malheureusement Cerdan se tue dans un accident d´avion le 22 octobre 1949.

Sa vie après Cerdan ne sera plus la même. Son succès international est immense, mais de maladies en accidents, Edith tombe dans la drogue (La Morphine). Début 1959, alors qu´elle triomphe une fois de plus à New York, elle s´effondre sur scène.

Elle triomphera encore à l´Olympia en 1961, mais Piaf n´est plus qu´une femme en sursis. Droguée, épuisée, malade, quelques concerts l´achèveront. Elle meurt à Grasse le 10 octobre 1963, mais sa mort est officialisée à Paris le 11 octobre, même jour que le décès de Jean Cocteau, son ami. Elle est enterrée au " Père Lachaise " devant une foule immense.

To help her father (street artist), Edith started singing in the street. In 1932, when she was 17 years old she fell pregnant, but her daughter Cècelle (Marcelle) died in 1935. When she was 20 years old, her mother abandoned her, she felt alone, on the board of depression, drugs and prostitution.

Louis Leplée, owner of an establishment that offered fashion events, gave her her first opporunity and he named her "Piaf" which means sparrow of Paris. In 1937, she started her career. During the War she never stopped singing from Paris to Berlin. In 1946, she wrote one of her titles that went around the world: La vie en rose.

In 1947, she went to New York and she met Marlène Dietrich and Marcel Cerdan. Marcel Cerdan became her lover. Unfortuantely, Cerdad was killed in an aeroplane accident 22nd October 1949.

Her life after Cerdan was not the same. Her international fame was immense but she sufferend from illnesses and accidents. Edith became addicted to drugs (morphine). At the start of 1959, she was again triumphant in New York but she collapsed on stage.

She trimphed in the 1961 Olympics but Piaf was a woman with a limit. Addicted to drugs, exhausted, ill, some concets finished her off. She died in Grasse the 10th October 1963, but her official death was in Paris 11th October, the same day as her friend, Jean Cocteau. She was burried in the " Père Lachaise " cemetery infront of a great crowd.
