Constructed in two
years, two months and five days for the Universal Exhibition in 1889
(100th aniversary of the French Revolution). The Eiffel Tower measured
312 metres including the flag in 1889; nowadays it measures 324 metres,
including the antenna.
More or less 30,000
visitors visit it every day. The Eiffel Tower is open everyday from
9:30 until 23:45 (from the 1st January - 10th June and 29th August -
31st December) and from 9:00 until midnight (from 11th June - 28th
August). They should have destroyed it in 1909 but because they had
installed a Radio antena on the 3rd floor, they decided against the
idea.
The Parisiens call it
"The Grande Dame". The Eiffel Tower has 1665 steps. The height of the
tower increases by 6 to 7 metres when it is hot. 370 people have
commited suicide there. 40 tonnes of paint are needed every year to
paint it.
The first floor which is
57metres high, offers a beautiful view of the Seine and the Field of
Mars. You can get there by lift or by walking up 345 steps.
On the second floor
which is 115metres high you can find the restaurant "Jules Vernes"
where you can eat very well. You can get there by lift or by walking
359 steps (from the first floor).
The third floor is 279
metres high and it offers a beautiful panoramic view of Paris. You can
see for 72 km; they say that you can see Chartes Cathedral. You can
only get to this floor by lift.
Gustave Eiffel died in
1923 when he was 91 years old. A bust of him can be found at the foot
of the tower.
