Modal Verbs (I): Dürfen, Können, Mögen, Wollen

Modal verbs are those that are usually accompanied by the infinitive of the main verb. They indicate possibility, duty, etc.



  • Sometimes modal verbs can act as the main verb.


  • In German, there are 6 modal verbs (see table below). Although they can have various meanings, we have indicated the most important ones:


  • Dürfen To be able to (permission)
    Können To be able to (possibility, capacity)
    Mögen To like (main verb)
    Wollen To want
    Sollen To must
    Müssen To must/have to


  • In this lesson, we are going to study the first four:


  • a) Dürfen - can be translated to mean "able to" in the sense of "having permission". Its declension in the present and past is the following:

    Indicative Present Past
    Ich Darf Durfte
    Du Darfst Durftest
    Er, sie, est Darf Durfte
    Wir Dürfen Durften
    Ihr Dürft Durftet
    Sie Dürfen Durften


    Here are some examples:
    Hier darf man nicht singen You can't sing here (it is not authorized, you don't have permission)
    Ich darf die Fenster öffnen I can open the window (I have permission)
    Darf ich antworten ? Can I answer?



    b) Können - can be translated as "able to" in the sense of "possibility" or in the sense of "to be capable, have the ability". It is declined in the following way:

    Indicative Present Past
    Ich Kann Konnte
    Du Kannst Konntest
    Er, sie, est Kann Konnte
    Wir Können Konnten
    Ihr Könnt Konntet
    Sie Können Konnten


    Here are some examples:
    Ich kann nicht laufen I can't run (I'm very tired) or I'm lame. I'm not in condition to run)
    Er kann ein Haus kaufen He can buy himself a house (he has money for it)
    Er kann nicht Tennis spielen He can't play tennis (he doesn't know how to)



    c) Mögen - translates as "like" and is declined in the following way:

    Indicative Present Past
    Ich Mag Möchte
    Du Magst Möchtest
    Er, sie, est Mag Möchte
    Wir Mögen Möchten
    Ihr Mögt Möchtet
    Sie Mögen Möchten


    Here are some examples:
    Ich mag Wein I like wine
    Sie mögen die Farbe Blau They like the colour blue



    d) Wollen - is translated as "to want" and it is declined in the following way:

    Indicative Present Past
    Ich Will Wollte
    Du Willst Wolltest
    Er, sie, est Will Wollte
    Wir Wollen Wollten
    Ihr Wollt Wolltet
    Sie Wollen Wollten


    Here are some examples:
    Ich will ein Haus kaufen  I want to buy a house
    Ich will Tennis spielen I want to play tennis
    Wir wollen nach Paris fahren We want to go to Paris
