Interrogative Pronouns

  • In the previous lesson, we pointed out the main interrogative pronouns:


  • Wer ? Who?
    Was ? What?
    Welcher ? Which?
    Was für einer ? What type of..?


  • We also pointed out that these pronouns go at the start of the question:


  • Wer ist das ? Who is he?
    Was ist das? What is this?


  • These interrogative pronouns have their declensions: "wer" and "was" only decline in the singular form.


  • Nominative Wer Who Was What
    Accusative Wen To who Was To what
    Genitive Wessen From who Wessen From what
    Dative Wem To who


  • Here are some examples:


  • Wer kauft dieses Hemd ?  Who's buying this shirt?
    Wem kaufst du dieses Hemd ? Who are you buying this shirt for?
    Wen hast du getroffen ? ¿Who have you found?


  • Whilst the pronouns "welcher" and "einer" are declined as demonstrative adjectives ("dieser"):


  • Singular Masculine Feminine Neutral
    Nominative Welcher / einer Welche / eine Welches / eines
    Accusative Welchen / einen Welche / eine Welches / eines 
    Dative Welchem / einem Welcher / einer Welchem / einem
    Genitive Welches / eines Welcher / einer Welches / eines
     
    Plural form: same as masculine, feminine and neutral form
