LEKTION 45
The Future

Sound Stop

  • The future tenses are formed in German with the help of the auxiliary verb "werden".

  • This verb is conjugated in the following way: werde, wirst, wird, werden, werdet, werden

    a) Simple future: formed by taking the auxiliary verb "werden" in the present and adding the infinitive of the main verb. Here are some examples:

Ich werde einen Wagen kaufen I will buy a car
Wir werden spazieren gehen We will go for a walk
Du wirst mit mir ins Kino gehen You will come to the cinema with me

As with sentences with compound verbs, the auxiliary verb goes after the subject, whilst the main verb goes at the end of the sentence.

    b) Future perfect: it is formed with the auxiliary verb "werden" in the present, plus the past participle (haben + participle). Here are some examples:

Ich werde ein Haus gekauft haben I will have bought a house
Wir werden spazieren gegangen sein We will have gone for a walk
Du wirst ins Kino gegangen sein You will have gone to the cinema

When the main verb is a verb of movement (e.g. gehen, spazieren), then the past participle is formed with the auxiliary "sein".

  • Both the Simple Future and the Future Perfect both describe actions that are going to develop in the future. The difference between them is:

1.- The Simple Future: the speaker is speaking at the present moment and they see the future action as something that still hasn't begun.

2.- The Future Perfect: the speaker takes a future moment as a reference as to when the action will have finished.

Let's have a look at an example:

Ich werde dieses Buch lesen I will read this book (the sentence still has not begun)

Am Sonntag werde ich dieses Buch gelesen haben On Sunday I will have read this book (this action still has not begun, but the person speaking makes a reference to next Sunday, which is a moment when the speaker believes the action will have finished)
