Uses of the Dative
The dative can also be called Wemfall because it answers the question Wem oder was? (Who? What?)

a) Indirect object
| Der Schuster gibt mir die Schuhe. |

b) Dative of belonging
| Das Haus gehört mir. |
| This house is my property |
c) Advantage / disadvantage
| Ein schlechter ruf schadet dir. |
| A bad reputation harms him |

| Seine guten Beziehungen nutzen ihm. |
| His important connections are useless to him. |
d) Appositions of a dative also goes in the dative.
| Das Haus gehört Herrn Müller, dem Direktor der Schuhfabrik. |
| This house belongs to Mr Müller, the director of the shoe factory. |

| Ich spreche mit Frau Anders, meiner Friseuse. |
| I speak to Mrs Anders, my hairdresser. |
