The static passive voice (Zustandspassiv)
Static Passive voice: sein + past participle
The static passive has an adverbial or attributive function. This form is used to explain a state (Zustand ) or the result of an action. Normally the agent of the action is not mentioned.
Normal Passive (Vorgangspasiv)
Das Restaurant wurde geschlossen.
Static passive (Zustandspassiv)
| Das Restaurant ist geschlossen. |
| The restaurant is closed. |
Normal passive (Vorgangspasiv)
| Das Haus wurde aufgeräumt. |
| He tidied the house |
Static passive (Zustandspassiv)
| Das Haus ist aufgeräumt. |
| The house is tidied |
Normal passive (Vorgangspasiv)
| Die Schulden wurden bezahlt. |
| The debts have been paid |
Static passive (Zustandspassiv)
| Die Schulden sind bezahlt. |
| The debts are paid |
The static passive is only used with 2 tenses: the present and imperfect tense.
Present
| Das Schwimmbad ist geöffnet. |
| The swimming pool is open. |
Past
| Letzte Woche war dieses Geschäft geschlossen. |
| Last week this shop was closed. |
| Die Wohnung war aufgeräumt, bevor du angekommen bist. |
| The flat was tidied before you arrived. |
