Commas
a) With lists
| Als Fremdsprache kann Französisch, Italienisch oder Spanisch gewählt werden. |

In front of the last word of the list, you don't add a comma but the conjunctions "oder" / "und".
b) Between two attributes you place a comma if you can join them with "und".
| Ein großes, bequemes Auto. |
| A big, comfortable car |
You do not add a comma if it is not possible to join them with the conjunction "und".
| Ein Glas dunkles bayrisches Bier. |
| A glass of dark Bavarian beer |
c) Contrasts are marked with commas.
In front of the following conjunctions you add a comma: aber / doch / jedoch / hingegen / nicht ... sondern / war ... aber / bald ... bald / teils ... teils / einerseits ... anderseits / nicht nur ... sondern auch /
| Die Apfelernte ist dieses Jahr gering, aber von sehr guter Qualität. |
| This year there hasn't been a great apple harves, but it is good quality. |
| Werktags fahren die Züge jede halbe Stunde, sonntags jedoch nur stündlich. |
| On work days, the trains come every half an hour, on Sunday they come every hour. |

d) To direct the word and in exclamations.
| Susanne, was hältst du von meinem Vorschlag? |

e) Attributes and appostions placed within the sentence are separated by commas.
| In dieser Sache müssen wir handeln, und zwar sofort. |
| We have to act immediatley on this matter. |
| Darf ich dich mit Karin ,meiner Cousine, bekannt machen? |
| Can I introduce you to my cousin Karin? |
f) You don't place commas in front of the following conjunctions:
und / sowie / sowohl - als auch / oder / bzw. (beziehungsweise) / entweder - oder / weder - noch
