Christmas
Eve is the 24th of December. The 25 and 26 are public
holidays in Germany. Christmas presents are given
on Christmas Eve.
The
Christmas tree is an important tradition in Germany.
The majority of Germans place their authentic trees
in the halls of their houses. They put decorations
on the tree: glass balls, stars and candles. They
sell Christmas trees in markets and florists. People
are not allowed to get them from the woods. Many
people also put decorations up in the windows of
their houses.
Before
Father Christmas was an important tradition in Germany
because the children thought that he gave the presents.
Today this tradition has lost importance.
As
with the rest of the world, food is an important
part of the Christmas holidays. Typical dishes are
duck and carpe. There are also many typical Christmas
biscuits.
At
Christmas time, it is normally cold. It can sometimes
reach minus 20 degrees. When it is snowing children
make snowmen. Snowball fights are also an important
winter sport. When there is ice on the lakes, people
scate on them.
The
Wise men day is a public holiday in the catholic
regions in the south of Germany. But it is not celebrated
in a special way. The Children don't receive presents
on this day.
