Lesson 9ª

Opening an Image

In this lesson, we will learn how to open and save image files and those files we create in our computer. Gimp can open several files we can work on at the same time or separately. To do this, we go to the File menu and select the option 'Open'.

In this case, a box will open in which we can browse our computer and choose the file (image) we want to open. By default, this will lead us directly to My Documents, but we can still search in any other part in our computer as in many other programs.

Gimp recognizes several image formats. Among the most common, we can mention:
BMP - JPEG (o JPG) - TIFF - GIF - PNG

Generally, these formats have different compression rates and their use will depend entirely on your need. Without worrying so much about the specifics, we can tell you that their difference lies on their quality and size. I'm sure you have noticed that the majority of the images found on the internet are jpg or jpeg, which is practically the same thing. This is due to the fact that they are easier to view and download because their compression is similar to a bmp.

Every time an image (or its format) is recognized by Gimp, when we click on it, we will see a preview in a box on the right of the screen. It will include the information on measurement and size.

Once we have chosen an image, we can open it in our working space by clicking 'open'.
