I create a new layer, and, to avoid confusion, I change its name to "shadows".
I place this layer on top of the flat base colours and under the layer with the drawing.
I change its opacity to 65% (This is up to you. You can keep the shadows opaque, or on the contrary, make them even more transparent for a lighter effect).
Then, with the brush tool, I mark where the shadows should go.
