Lesson 21 ª

Let's begin with another topic: facial expressions.

To begin practicing, I will draw a Shojo style face (girl). After tracing her "frame", I will change her expressions.

In Manga style, strongly styled, face muscles are not usually visible, nor the way skin wrinkles due to the contraction of these muscles.

Expressiveness is found in traits; specially in the eyes. However, you can also find it in the position of the eye brows, the mouth, sweat or tears, blush, etc.

It is believed that this originates from the very beginnings of Manga style, when Osamu Tezuka, the first master of these comics, began drawing characters with large, round eyes and child-like traits. He may have been influenced by Takarazuka theater, in which all actresses are women. Osamu's mother used to take him to these colourful plays, where acting falls entirely on actresses. They were painted in an exaggerated manner to enlarge their traits and to enhance their expressiveness.

Let's begin with a neutral face; with no expression.
