Three variations to express sadness:
In a sad face, the lines of the eye brows and mouth fall down. Eyes are filled with melancholy, also falling to the lower part.
To represent crying, eye brows are done with a double curve, eyes are flooded with tears and the mouth is drawn open to represent lament.
