The purpose of these characters, of this style of drawing cartoons, is humour, exaggeration and parody.

Quite frequently, you will see characters vary in Manga comics; transforming all of a sudden into child-like pictures to represent a funny situation or an exaggerated reaction.

In other situations, stories are created entirely in super-deformed style. They sometimes mock a "serious" comic.

Generally, to transform a "realistic" style (in quotes since Manga characters are always drawn in a conventional and styled manner) into a super-deformed style, we must alter its proportions.

As we have seen from the previous examples, their bodies are shortened and their heads are enlarged. Eyes are also made larger and more expressive than usual. In regards to clothing and any other objects appearing in this style, (cars, trees, houses,...), they are drawn in simpler forms.
