ATTACHMENT 1.- THE CASE OF TELEVISION NETWORKS IN SPAIN

1.-) Tele5 – Formula 1 – Fernando Alonso.-

Tele 5 was able to get ahead the phenomenon of Fernando Alonso (Spanish F-1 racer), who was able to provoke a craze in Spain for a minority sport such as Formula 1 . On the first year of Fernando Alonso in Formula 1, races were re-transmitted on national television. However, since his results were not positive, there was a loss of interest in the career as a racer which Fernando Alonso had with plenty of prizes since he was 3 years old.

Because of this, Tele 5 was able to get ahead from its competitors. They bet on Fernando Alonso and Formula 1 strongly, even when the results of the pilot weren't important. With a movie production and an impressive director, they were able to gather the Spanish audience before their television sets to watch every circuit. Furthermore, Fernando Alonso changed to a different racing team and started winning races until he became World Champion. It was a round business for Tele 5.

2.-) La Sexta – FIFA World Cup 2006.-

La Sexta is the latest television network to appear in Spain. There is no doubt that it has made strong bets from the start. To be able to reach every Spanish home, it bought the rights to transmit the World Cup in Germany. That was their strategy, clearly: to be able to broadcast all over the country. And, its tool: the World Cup, with which they will transmit, among others, the matches played by the Spanish national football team. La Sexta , and only La Sexta, in exclusive, will transmit those games. This is undoubtedly an advantage when compared to its competition. It will surely place La Sexta in the minds of spectators.

(In the end, La Sexta will not retransmit -in exclusive- those games considered as general interest -opening game, the Final, and those of the Spanish football team- but will continue doing so at the same time as CUATRO -Spanish television network-. As a result, it has gained a place in the homes of the Spanish people and has not only recovered its investment but will also gain economic benefits. In the last section of this course, SUPPORTING LITERATURE, we offer a current piece of news that complements this example).
