Lesson 8ª

Managing Tags

It is much better to create new Tags while writing new Posts, but if you ever need to see the full list of tags in use, how many times they've been applied to Posts or would like to remove some (perhaps you added two tags with the same word in plural and in singular) this is how you'd do it.

Some key things you ought to know about tags:

  • Tags give you the opportunity to load a post with keywords you might not have been able to use in the main body text or title, or perhaps variations of words or synonyms. Placing them as tags helps when someone searches for these words on a search engine.
  • Users can also browse Tags as they can Categories, this gives you an extra layer of micro-organization for your Posts.

Under "Posts" in the Dashboard, you'll find "Post Tags". Click it to be taken to the tags page.

You'll see a list of the most popular tags in use, that is, when you have enough posts and tags so that they fill this page. They'll be arranged in what is called a "tag cloud", with the most used words proportionately bigger than the lesser used ones. At this stage you probably have just a couple from the previous lesson. These are also listed on the right hand side of the page in a manner you should recognize from editing Posts and Categories. You can run your mouse over these and choose to delete them or edit them.

If the tag you want to delete or edit isn't visible on the first page of the list, use the search tool.

Editing Tags is as simple as editing Categories. There is a name, a "slug" and a description. Edit them and click "Update Tag".
