Creating and Editing Pages

Creating a WordPress Page is quite easy once you know how to create a Post. Even the design of the page you'll use to do it looks almost identical to that used to create a post.

A Page is only different to a Post in three ways.

  • A Page can not be placed in a Category, it is a stand alone object
  • Pages can be sub-pages and placed within a parent page
  • Pages sit outside the chronologically ordered Posts. They aren't placed in the list of Posts and we aren't really interested in what date they were published on. Pages are more for holding your contact details or explaining to visitors the purpose of the website - things that are generally more static.

wordpressIn the Dashboard, you'll find the "Pages" controls. Let's add a page. Under "Pages" click "Add New".

Choose a title, "Contact Me" for example, and write something in the main body of the Page, perhaps your email address so readers can contact you.

Do you have a link to a social media site that you use? Even if not, let's pretend you do. On a new line write the text "Find me online here".

wordpress

wordpressNow highlight this text and make it bold.

Still highlighted, now click the link button to make it a link.

A window will pop up. Type the URL of your profile, or some other website you have online. If you don't have one, just add a link to your favorite search engine.

wordpress

Where it says "Target" choose the option "Open in a new window".

Click the "Save Draft" button

Just as with Posts, you can save drafts, see previews and ultimately publish your page. Below these options are some extra attributes. You can assign this page to be a sub-page of another, or set a page order that most themes will respect.

Setting a Page order number is still something WordPress is working on. Remember this is free software created by volunteers. If your theme supports the "Order" field, giving each page a number will influence in which order a page is displayed in the menu. You can number the pages "1,2,3,4" or even "100, 1000, 1500", lower numbered pages are usually displayed by the theme first.

Scroll all the way down the page and you'll see you can turn Comments for this page on or off. Not all themes support comments on their pages, but some do.

Now click "Publish". Visit your site and you'll see a new page in the list!

Editing

Editing a Page is done in the same way as editing a Post. Below "Pages" in the Dashboard, you'll find "Edit". Click it.

You'll be shown a list of Pages. You should see two - the one you just created and sample one created during the installation of WordPress called "About".

When you run your mouse over them, you'll be able to delete the page or edit it. Choose "Edit" on one of these pages.

Again you see the same page as when you created the page. Make any changes you like and simply click "Update Page".
