Chinese New Year

The Chinese annually celebrate two New Years: The New Year from the Western calendar and the New Year from the Lunar calendar. The Lunar calendar is also known as the agricultural calendar.

Following international practice, China adopted some time ago the gregorian calendar which celebrates the first day of the year on the 1st January.

The 1st January in the lunar calendar is a different day for the Chinese, who celebrate the Sping Holiday, which is one of their traditional holidays (the most important holiday of all).

On Near Years eve (30th December in the lunar calendar) the whole family gets together to have dinner, which symbolizes family unity. The family stay awake until the morning. On this holidays people visit their family and friends and wish them a 'Happy New Year'.
