LEKTION 44
Relative Pronouns

Sound Stop

  • Relative pronouns are used in a sentence to talk about a noun that has previously been talked about, thus avoiding repetition.

  • Mein Bruder spielt mit mir My brother plays with me
Mein Bruder wohnt hier My brother lives here

To avoid repeating "Mein Bruder", I use the relative pronoun:
Mein Bruder, der hier wohnt, spielt mit mir My brother, who lives here, plays with me

  • Here is another example:

  • Dein Wagen steht vor meinem Haus Your car is in front of my house
Dein Wagon ist rot Your car is red

In order not to repeat "Dein Wagon" twice:
Dein Wagon, der ist rot, steht vor meinem Haus Your car, which is red, is in front of my house

  • Here is a list of relative pronouns:

  • Der, die, das That
    Welcher, welche, welches The one
    Was What/that
    Wer Which

  • Here are some examples:

  • Deine Schwester,  welcher ich helfe, studiert viel  Your sister, the one I help, studies a lot
"Welcher" is the dative of "welche". Relative pronouns decline and you use one case or another depending on its function in the sentence

Ich habe alles gekauft was du wolltest  I have bought everything that you wanted

Der Wagen, den du gekauft hast, ist sehr hübsch  The car, that you have bought, is very pretty

Sein Lehrer, den ich kenne, ist sehr intelligent  His teacher, the one I know, is very intelligent

  • Here you can see how the relative pronouns decline:

  • Der, die, das:  is declined in the same way as the definite article, except for the genitive singular and plural forms and the dative plural forms:

Genitive singular Dessen (m), deren (f), dessen (n)
    Genitive plural Deren (m, f, n)
    Dative plural Denen (m, f, n)

Welcher, welche, welches:  is declined in the same way as the demonstrative article "dieser, diese, dieses".

Wer, was:  is declined in the same was as interrogative pronoun
