Germany
is often called the country of "poets and thinkers".
In all of the eras since the Middle Age, there have
been poets and writers that today belong to world
literature.
In
the era of the Picture (12020 - 1785) the Dramas
of Lessing and the works of Winkelmann are of fundamental
importance. The dramas of the two German classics
Goethe and Schiller (1786-1832) are still popular
today. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Faust, Tasso,
Iphigenie auf Tauris); Friedrich von Schiller (Don
Carlos, Die Jungfrau von Orleans, Wilhelm Tell).
Important
authors from the Romanticism era are Clemens Brentano
with his collection of popular songs and the Grimm
Brothers with their stories.
The
era of Realism and Naturalism have important authors:
Theodor Storm (Der Schimmelreiter),Theodor Fontane
(Effi Briest).
The
literature that developed after the First World
War was dominated by: Franz Kafka, Kurt Tucholski
and Erich Kästner. Important authors of novels
from this era are: Heinrich Mann (Der Untertan),
Herrmann Hesse (Siddharta / Unterm Rad), Robert
Musil (Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften), Thomas Mann
(Der Zauberberg / Joseph und seine Brüder),
Erich Maria Remarque (Im Westen nichts Neues), Carl
Zuckmayer (Der Hauptmann von ertold Brecht (Dreigroschenoper
/Mutter Courage), they all became famous.
After
the First World War, the following people became
particularly famous: Ingeborg Bachmann und Paul
Celan mit ihrer Lyrik, Friedrich Dürrenmatt,
Max Frisch, Gottfried Benn, Heinrich Böll,
Günter Eich and Günter Grass.
