Lesson 7ª

Demonstrative adjectives (l' adjectif démonstratif)

  • Here are the demonstrative adjectives in French:

  • Ce / cet Masculine singular This, that
    Cette Femenine singular This, that
    Ces Plural These, those

  • You use the masculine singular form "cet" when the noun which it accompanies starts with a vowel or the letter "h":

  • Ce garçon This/that boy
    Cet avocat This/that lawyer
    Ce crayon This/that pencil
    Cet arbre This/that tree
    Cet hôtel This/that hotel

  • The plural form is the same whether masculine or feminine.

  • Whether you translate this adjective as "this" or "that" will depend on the context. However, in French to indicate the proximity or distance of an object they use the particles "-ci" (here) or "-là" (there).

  • The construction of phrases is therefore the following: demonstrative adjective + noun + particle "-ci / -là":

  • Cette voiture-ci This car
    Cette voiture-là That car
    Ce crayon-ci This pencil
    Ce crayon-là That pencil
