Commas (Cont)

a) Attribute setnences after an article, possessive pronoun or demonstrative pronoun are not separated by commas.

Das von uns sorgfältig vorbereitete und von allen erwartete Fest war ein großer Erfolg.
The party that we had carefully prepared and which had been waited for by all, was a great success
Unsere schon anfangs geäußerten Bedenken sind noch nicht zerstreut worden.
Our worries, which we had commented at the start, still haven't changed.

b) Commas in complex sentences.

Er erhob sein Glas, und alle tranken ihm zu.
He raised his glass and we all toasted him.
-
Wir fahren in einem Taxi nach Hause, oder unsere Freunde holen uns am Bahnhof ab.
We'll take a taxi home or our friends will pick us up from the train station.

Between the main sentence and subordinate, you add a comma

Wenn es möglich ist, erledigen wir den Auftrag sofort.

An inserted subordinate goes between two commas.

Eines Tages, es war mitten im Winter, stand ein Pferd in unserem Garten.
One day, in winter, there was a horse in our garden.

c) With comparisons you place a comma if after "wie" or "als" there is a conjugated verb

Die Arbeit ist schwieriger, als du glaubst.
The work is more difficult than you think.
Ich habe das essen so vorbereitet, wie du es mir empfohlen hast.
I have prepared the food in the way that you told me to.

d) Subordinate sentences of the same grade are separated by commas if they are not connected by "und" o "oder".

Es erstaunte mich, dass Fritz die Prüfung bestanden hatte, Susanne aber durchgefallen war.
I was suprised that Fritz had passed the exam, whilst Susanna had failed.
