Lesson 10

MAKING TIME TO BE ALONE

In all fields of our life, the relationship we have with others is extremely important:  team  work, customer services, visits from investors, etc. Experts estimate that around 80% of time is udes dealing directly with other people. Even when we are not at work, we are always  surrounded by friends, colleagues, relations, neighbours, etc.

This is important for our professional and personal life, however, we do need moments alone, when we can think about our life. This time can be in the office or at home.

The MBR proposes structured and unstructured ways for a person to make time:

  • You can programme quiet time at home or at work
Many people keep the first or the last hour of the day, according to their energy cycles, to be alone. These people usually instruct people to leave them alone. If the only way you can relax is by planning time to do it, this method is probably the best method for you.
  • You should take advantege of the natural interuptions at work

If you are naturally flexible, it can be practicable for you to find small periods of free time here and there to isolate yourself and relax. Through my own experience, I can confirm that on occasions, periods of 15-30 minutes are enought to clear up ideas, organize activities, mentally plan and even, relax and take a break!

  • Some people take advantage of the isolationg they have travelling from home to work and viceversa
Mainly when you travel by train or bus, you generally isolate yourself from the rest of the passengers. If you are one of the people that likes to work during these journeys, then this is not the right moment to relax your nervous system. However, you should consider if it would be better to work at another time.
  • You can establish a determined moment to be alone at home.

If you are the type of person that gets up early, you can dedicate the hour before breakfast to be alone; or if family traditions allow you, you can isolate yourself for half an hour after returning from work.

  • You can isolate yourself at home doing solitary activities

Instead of establishing a fixed time to be alone, some people carry out relaxing activities to relax the mind, like for example, gardening, music, hobbies, etc.

  • The moments should be relasing.

Some individuals are able to calm themselves down through meditation. Others relax their minds by doing something different. Others mentally relax carrying out exercise. And others like to sit down and allow their thoughts to run freely.

It is important to remember that even if it is at work, travelling or at home, the aim of this time is to give yourself a break and recharge the batteries.

You could discover that the time you dedicate to yourself helps you with constructive ideas and solutions to some of your problems. However, you should not assign yourself specific objectives during these relaxing times as you will need this time to increase your efficiency.
